Food for Thought

Eat your way to a smarter brain.

By Chris Gonzalez
Aced today’s crossword? Thank the scrambled eggs you had for breakfast. The human brain is a highly sensitive organ, and evidence points to some key ingredients that make it more efficient. Eggs boost alertness, speed up reaction time and defuse stress, so don’t skip the day’s first meal. Add some matcha green tea, since it’s high in antioxidants and contains a bit of that oft–maligned caffeine to sharpen your focus. Whole–grain cereals improve circulation and overall heart health, in return giving your brain some extra clout. Essential fatty acids (particularly omega–3s) help the body’s nerve signals instant-message your head when it comes time to read the newspaper, so fill your fridge with avocados, walnuts, leafy vegetables, pumpkin seeds and fresh fish. At approximately 75% water, your gray matter needs plenty of it to deliver nutrients and eliminate toxins; dehydration causes brain drain. Strawberries and blueberries help with coordination, balance and concentration by keeping your blood–sugar levels up with a healthy supply of glucose. To boot, blueberries also gamely battle brain degeneration and aging, and repair short-term memory. Now what were we talking about again? Better go eat some of those blueberries.
