A native of the Netherlands, Christiaan Blok now lives in Phoenix, where he pursues a career in architectural and interior photography. He’s photographed for numerous magazines including Western Interiors, House & Garden and Traditional Home. Sparse light captured by the old Dutch masters has been an eminent influence: “Since the weather in Holland is so terrible, you quickly learn to see light in the darkness of overcast days; sunlight slipping through the massive overcast winters is like finding water in the North African deserts,” he says. |

Compared to five years ago, Charlene Rooke found a very different Miami when she visited this time: Instead of being just a wild party town, it’s developed some substance, like wellness-based spas/hotels and cultural events like Art Basel. Charlene’s the editor of the lifestyle magazine Western Living in Vancouver and a former editor of Air Canada’s inflight travel magazine, enRoute. While at enRoute, her peripatetic existence took her to China, Argentina, Chile, Switzerland, Holland, Jamaica, Cuba, the Dominican Republic and all over North America. |

Jim Sutherland has been writing magazine articles for 23 years and editing magazines for 18. “I seem to be that rare (possibly for good reason) journalistic threat, specializing in design and lifestyle but also business,” he says. Lately, he’s spending time in New York, where he’s currently working at Institutional Investor magazine, which is more fun than it sounds, he claims. “Writing [the article on water design] helped me work out some thoughts about our own place, which I’ve long felt needed a water element of some sort.” |
